Question – Grant

Hi Josh

When you listen to music is it important for you to know what words are being sung and to attempt to decipher a meaning from them? Maybe it’s because I’m not a musician but I think a lot of the time I make connections with songs through the lyrics, and by trying to make meaning out of the lyrics.
Would you be willing to make the lyrics for the Dot Hacker album available? I know I’m not the only one who would love to read them. I love your voice but a lot of the time I find it hard to understand what you are saying.
Thank you for making so much amazing music with John, the Dots, and now the Chili Peppers. You’ve written or played on many of my favourite songs and they mean a lot to me.

Well, being a musician, I never really listened closely to the lyrics…in the past. It was all about the sound for me. Obviously, it was the sound of well placed, good sounding lyrics I liked, but I was never hell bent on understanding what was being said. I always felt that it was harder to understand what people were saying for me, or that I just didn’t care as much. It took me a long time to admit that I actually do care. I may be a little lazy when listening to the words, but they are enormously important to me.
