Ears Wide Open: Dot Hacker

00

Josh Klinghoffer is an axeman extraordinaire — his latest gig, of course, is as John Frusciante’s successor in Red Hot Chili Peppers — but the album he made as Dot Hacker is not a guitarist’s album, at least not in the way the solo works of Frusciante or, say, Graham Coxon are. The music, made prior to Klinghoffer’s joining the Chili Peppers in 2009 (there’s an advance full-length somewhere here in Buzz Bands HQ), is an Escher-like rendering of bent tones, shifting tempos and darting melody — dream-pop not beholden to pop constructs. Klinghoffer and bandmates Eric Gardner, Clint Walsh and Jonathan Hischke this week released four songs via a self-titled EP. “Order/Disorder” is probably the most orderly track of the bunch, an excellent entree into the quartet’s heady experiments.
